Sri Kukkuteswara Swamy Temple is a big old temple. Puruhutika temple had arranged on the northeastern corner of the fundamental temple confronting the south. Lord Indra worshipped Puruhutika Devi. When Indra cheated Ahalya (wife of Gautama Maharshi) in the way of Gautama and has cussed by the Maharshi, Indra lost his testes and had the marks of Yoni all over his body. 

He felt regrettable and prąyed Gautama a lot. The Rishi notified and accepted that the Yoni marks would look like eyes so that Indra would call Sahasraksha afterwards. Indra lost his testes. He wanted to restore them. He left his kingdom, went to Piithika puri, and did Tapasya for Jaganmata.

After a long time, Jaganmata emerged to him and exalted him with prosperity and testes. Indra was truly satisfied and prąyed her as Puruhutika Devi (One who Indra adored). After a long period, Jagadguru Sripada Vallabha took birth in Pithapuram. He, too, worshipped Puruhutika Devi as well as identified himself. He is a variation of Dattatreya. Pithapuram had also considered Dakshina Kasi.

Sri Kukkuteswara Swamy Temple Architecture:

The temple had built in Dravidian style with a gopuram and the vimana above the sanctum adorned with sculptures. The temple is vast and spacious. Near the temple pond is a huge statue of Gyasura in the lying pose with the Trimurthis, which depicts the temple’s legend. The Puruhutika Devi shrine had carvings of Ashtadesa Shaktipeeths on its walls. 

The idol of Devi has four hands. There are shrines of Vinayaka, Subrahmanya Swamny, Kalabhaoirava, Annapoorneshwari, Sri Rama, etc., around the temple. The Lingam of Shiva is a swayambhu ad in the form of a cock. There is a huge Nandi statue. Dattatreya temple is also inside the premise.
