One of the most popular areas near Salem is Mettur Dam. You can visit the Dam there and go sightseeing as well. The water store, which has hilly terrain, is known to be a popular spot in the Salem District.

When the Dam’s water level is low, you can see ancient Hindu shrines and churches preserved at this ancient site. However, natives who lived in Nayambadi live in Martalli town and other nearby towns; these towns were previously a part of Erode, Tamil Nadu, before they became a part of Kollegal, Karnataka.

Whenever there was a debate, these villagers were always the casualties. People would run in every direction to save their lives. Men would try to protect the town with guns, keeping their wives and children safe at home.

The Dam is a massive engineering marvel. It spans over 1,700 meters and can hold nearly two billion litres of water. It was built in 1943, 30 miles from Salem in Mettur Village.

Its verdant surroundings make it quite popular with tourists, and one of its most extraordinary features is its design: an achievement of Indian engineering genius.

History

Mettur Dam has a great history. It is the oldest and largest Dam in India. Construction started in 1925 and took nine years to complete, with the official inauguration by Governor Sir George Stanley on August 21, 1934.

The Dam is said to have been funded with UK funds for evacuating the site of the Dam. But when its water level recedes, Hindu and Christian sculptures and idols emerge from the surface.

A Mettur Thermal Power station is a base load power plant for the whole Tamil Nadu Electricity Board. It is one of the primary sources of electricity for the whole state.
