The name ‘Kodiveri’ had derived from the Tamil word ‘Kodivari’, which means tiger, which refers to the forest area around the Dam where many tigers live.

Coracle Rovers, which handles the rides, said the onslaught of tourists has increased since water from the Bhavani Sagar Reservoir to the Kodiveri check dam last month to irrigate the fields tainted by the Thadapalli-Arakanakottai canals.

At other times, coracle rovers from the surrounding villages make a living by fishing. Incidentally, a section of tourists visits this place to taste freshly caught and fried fish.

The scenic location of the Check Dam gives the place the status of a tourist destination. Although the playground and lawn for children are not well maintained, they create an atmosphere that instantly allows visitors to fall into the holiday mood.

The entrance to the Kodiveri Falls is on either side of the Bhavani River. You can rent this round boat from one side to the other. People could even walk across the river, but it seemed so dangerous!

If you go to Hogenakkal, you know how much fun travelling on one of these boats is. The boatman quickly spins the boat to increase the thrill. Kodiveri Falls is also known as ‘Mini Niagara Falls.

The Bhavani river has its tributaries with various ups and downs, and the river’s water does not complete the needs of the farmers of the surrounding areas. The local chief minister created a mandatory dam on the Bhavani River to manage the area’s water and water crises.

Since then, the Dam has provided a regular and healthy water supply to the area. The level of irrigation in the surrounding area has increased, and the food grain production graph has also increased in the past.

Conditions improved, and the area’s per capita income increased. The government took over the Kodiveri falls and Dam in 1937.

It was built in 1125 AD by Soja Kongalwan of Semba Vettuvar Jayagonda. Creating a dam is like carving a 20-foot stone wall. The stones were interlocked with iron rods, and the lead had been used as mortar.

However, these symptoms do not appear except during the dry season when the water level in the river drops significantly.

Two channels arise from the Dam; One is on the north side of the Bhavani river and the other on the south side is the “Arakkan Kottai Channel” and the “Tadapalli Channel”.

The lands north of Gobichettipalayam are fertile due to the flow of the Tadapalli channel. Sugarcane and paddy cultivation are high in this region. The lush green fields are also a delight to watch.

Technical Part

The Dam had built of hard stones and mortar. The sound wall was built 20 feet wide as the main wall to withstand the heavy water load. Water release controllers allow water to flow freely without harming the surrounding areas. Thick iron rods and lead were used in construction to provide long-term support.

They developed two channels on either side of the Dam to open the canals. The Arakkan Kottai Channel and the Tadapalli Channel had arranged on two sides.

Gobichettipalayam has a fertile area due to the irrigation coming from this Dam. Sugarcane cultivation is accomplished on a large scale here.
