The Koniamman Temple is one of the most famous temples of Coimbatore. The Temple was built around 600 years ago by the leader of a small cult, ‘Irulas’. The small village where it had built was named ‘Covanputhur’ after the leader of this group, ‘Covan’. Later the name Covanputhur changed to what we know today as Coimbatore.
The story of the construction of the Temple is an interesting one! The team built a fort to guard Covanputhur from the invasion of the Chola rulers. A temple has constructed to guard the fort, and they named the principal deity of this Temple Goddess Koniamman. Later the ruler of the Mysore dynasty further constructed and consecrated the Goddess Koniamman in the style of “Mahisasura mardhani”, which means the slayer of buffalo demon.
