Thiruporur Murugan temple is an old temple. In the early nineteenth century, the Pallava dynasty established this temple. The Swayambu Murthi, coated by an anthill, is a popular deity or embodiment of Lord Muruga.
The Chidambara Swamigal, according to legend, discovered the temple in the same anthill as the Chidambara Swamigal.
During the Pallava period, the monarchs reestablished the existing idol. The temple exists today because of Chidambara Swamigal and his successors.
According to the legend, Lord Murugan defeated Tharaga in this historical location and made him his slave. Since they fought a battle at this place, Por became famous. In Tamil, Por means war. So, they call this place Thirupporur. Hence, it is also named Samarapuri or Yudhapuri.
