History:

Once the sage Agasthaya wants 2 hills of Siva giri and Shakti giri to the home in the south. So, he ordered hid devotee Idumban to carry them. On his guru order, Idumban carried the 2 hills on his shoulders in a kavadi (the instrument which helps to carry the 2 things on either the shoulders). In the middle of his journey, he felt so tired and wants to take rest. So, he dropped the kavadi in a place and went to take rest.

Meanwhile, Lord Shiva conducted a challenge for his 2 sons Ganesha and Karthikeya. The challenge is all about to take a tour around 3 worlds and who came first will get a prize of Wisdom fruit. On listening to this, Karthikeyan started his journey on his vahana Peacock, while Lord Ganesha simply turned around his parents and saying that his parents are his world. Impressed with this Lord Shiva presented the wisdom fruit to Lord Ganesha. Knowing this Karthikeyan got anger and left kailasham. Anger Karthikeya reached the place where Idumaban placed the hill.

On knowing this Lord Shiva Soothed him by saying that Karthikeyan himself a wisdom fruit. Lord Karthikeya then settled here in a peaceful manner of Muruga. On the other hand, Idumban returned to the place of 2 hills he placed. But he unable to lift the hills. Then Muruga made him impossible to lift this and engaged into war with idumban. But IDumban died in the war. But he requested Murugan to the accept the devotee vows whoever carries a kavadi resembling the 2 hills and reached with a desired vow. And also allow him like a guard to this hill in the entrance.
