Overview of Anjaneyar Temple Nanganallur

The Temple’s foundation stone was laid in 1989 by a group of Anjaneya followers – Sri Maruti Bhakta Samaj. It finally opened to the public in 1995. The most prominent feature of the Temple is the 32 feet idol. Hanuman took shape with a single granite stone and then gave shape.

The Temple is not rich in history, but it commands respect. It is special that both Lord Rama and Lord Krishna are present in that Temple. It is a must-see place for devotees of Anjaneya or Hanuman and anyone who wants to see a different kind of Temple than the usual Vishnu and Shiva in Chennai.

Legend of Nanganallur Anjaneyar Temple

This Temple is only a few decades old. However, the deity of this shrine is a central figure in multiple mythological stories. Within the temple premises are temples of Lord Rama and Lord Krishna, signifying the presence of Hanuman in both the great epics of Hinduism – the Ramayana and the Mahabharata.

Hanuman is a ‘Rama-devotee’ in the Ramayana and is important in Rama’s victory in the battle against Ravana in Lanka.

Lord returns to Mahabharata and reveals his identity to Bhima. They were both sons of Vayu or Vayu and, thus, brothers by blood. The two meet when Bhima collects the hypnotizing smell of flowers requested by his wife, Draupadi and goes to find a lake from there.  Hanuman promised Bhima they would see the Pandavas and sit on Arjuna’s chariot during the battle.

History of Nanganallur Anjaneyar Temple

The Temple had been established at the request of a community of staunch devotees of Lord Hanuman and followers of his path. Sri Maruti Bhakta Samaj is the name of the group.

The main enthusiasts behind the Temple were Sri Raghavendra Swamy and Sri Kanchi Paramacharya. Their spiritual calling is to build a building for the God they worship. The Hindu Religious & Charitable Department had now taken over the Temple.

Construction of Nanganallur Anjaneyar Temple

The Temple’s main attraction is the colossal deity of Hanuman carved out of a single piece of granite. The colossal deity is 322 feet tall, dark black, towering over the rest of the shrines and devotees.

It is unique because it had carved from a singular piece of stone without any breakpoint or streamline. In height, it is second only to the Hanuman statue at Panchvati near Puducherry.

The temple dome of the deity is about 90 feet tall. The sanctum sanctorum is connected to other shrines in the precincts through corridors around it. Other shrines include one for Lord Rama, Lakshmana and Sita.

But to honour the presence of Hanuman in both the epics, the Ramayana and the Mahabharata, a sannidhi of Lord Krishna was also built. His two queens, Rukmini and Satyabhama, accompanied Lord Krishna. Hanuman adorns Arjuna’s chariot to protect it from any harm or destruction from the rival Kauravas.
