History of the Bhadrachalam Temple

Sree Rama appeared in the dreams of his devotee Pokala Dhammakka and said about the idols of Rama, Sita, and Laxmana in Bhadragiri. Dhammakka recovered the gods from the anthill, constructed a bamboo temple, and performed pooja.

Bhagawan Rama told Dhammakka that one of his devotees would build a temple. The devotee turned into Bhakta Ramadas.

Kancharla Gopanna, a fervent devotee of Rama, was born to Linganna Murthy and Kamamba. Goppanna was the nephew of Akkanna, the administrative head in the court of Nawab Abdul Hasan Shah, known as Taneshah of Golconda. Gopanna as Tahsildar of Palvancha Paragana.

Once Gopanna heard about the Jatara at Bhadrachalam, he became curious and visited the Jatara. There, he found Dhammakka’s idols in an anthill, so he wanted to construct the temple.

Gopanna built the temple from the land revenue of 6 Lakhs without the permission of the Nizam Nawab. After the temple was created, Gopanna called Bhakta Ramadas.

After the temple was constructed, Ramadas experienced actual miseries. They dismissed them from services for misutilization of revenue for building the temple, and he was put in jail for 12 years.

One day late at night, Rama and Laxmana approached Nawab and paid 6 Lakh Mohurs, exposing them as Ramoji and Laxmoji, the servants of Bhakta Ramadas. After that, the Nawab realized that Rama and Laxmana had come, paid, and released Ramadas from jail.
