History of Swamimalai Temple:

According to history, the creator of the universe, Brahma, passed by the side of Lord Murugan when they met on occasion. But the Lord Brahma did not give respect to the young Lord Murugan.

So, Lord Murugan intercepted Brahma and asked him the meaning of the Pranava mantra “Ohm.” Lord Brahma could not answer the question.

So, Lord Murugan put Brahma in jail as he could not answer the question. Lord Murugan started acting as Brahma. Hence, Vishnu appealed to Lord Shiva to release Brahma. So, Lord Murugan released Brahma.

After that, Lord Shiva asked the son to tell the answer to that question. Lord Murugan tells the answer o his father in the ear. This incident occurred in this place.

Significance of the Temple:

The Swamimalai is the fourth army camp of Lord Murugan. This Swamimalai is the place where Lord Murugan taught his father.

The Vel weapon in Lord Murugan’s hand represents three divine powers – Itcha Shakti, Gnana Shakti, and Kriya Shakti.

Lord Brahma, Bhoodevi, and Indira worshipped the young Lord Murugan in this Swamimalai temple as Lord Murugan is his father’s guru. People call him Gurumalai, Gurugiri.
