Kolanjiappar Temple Virudhachalam

As per legends, Sundarar, the famous Nayanmar saint in the Saivite tradition of the 8th century, came to Virudhachalam (called Thirumudukundram) in his old age. He sang the praise of the Vriddhagiriswarar. Shiva was much pleased with his presentation and wanted to have him sing a melody again.

He sent his son Muruga as a huntsman to the Kolanji forest across which Sundarar was traversing. The huntsman took away the belongings of Sundarar. He demanded the hunter return his belongings, for which the huntsman wanted him to be back at Thirumudukundram.

Sundarar came back to Virudhachalam temple and sang the praise of Shiva again. Vrida means old age, so the place called Virudhachalam as Sundarar came to the location during his old age. Muruga afterwards set his abode in the Kolanji forest as Kolanjiappar.
