The Sukreswar Temple is a Shiva temple in Assam. The Temple has located on the Itakhuli hill (Sukreswar) on the south bank of river Brahmaputra in Panbazar, Guwahati city. Near the Temple, the compound has a flight of steps to the river. Sit on the steps of Sukreswar ghat, and one can enjoy the sunset and children and older people bathing. It has one of the largest Lingams of Lord Shiva. Temple Timings are Monday To Sunday: 6 am to 7 pm.

Significance Of The Temple:

The Temple is famous for having colossal Shiva lingams in India and the sixth Jyotir Lingam. This great Indian monument of India is the contribution of the King of the Ahom dynasty of Assam, Pramatta Singh. Throughout the year, devotees from many far-off places, including many from foreign countries, come to see this largest Shiva lingam, built in the 18th century. Adjacent to the Temple is a Nat Mandir. Though the Temple is still in good condition, a sheet of iron has replaced the adjacent Nat temple.

History of Sukreswar Temple:

The Temple’s history is associated with Saint Sukra, who made a retreat at the Itakhuli hillock, where he meditated daily and worshipped God Shiva. The meditated place is called Hastagiri as per the (Kalika Purana)Kali Purana, for it is the shape of the elephant hump. It has believed to be constructed in 1744 by Ahom King Pramatta Singha (1744–1751). King Rajeswar Singha (1751–69), who also promoted the cause of the Saiva cult, made financial provisions for the Sukreswar Temple in 1759.
