Basistha temple has located southeast of Guwahati city, Assam State. It is a Lord Shiva mandir. According to legend, the ashram has founded by the great saint Basistha. The Temple stands on the banks of mountain streams that originate from the higher hills of Meghalaya, forming the great River Basistha and River Bahini/Bharalu that flows through the city. This ashram has believed to be the home of the sage Basistha. The ashram is located a few kilometres (10-12) from Guwahati, on the outskirts of the Garbhanga reserve forest, which has a population of elephant animals.
This Garbhanga reserve forest is also a butterfly reserve. Although the ashram has a temple, the cave in which the Muni Vasistha has believed to have meditated has located 5 km inside the ashram. The ashram also has a waterfall.
Basistha Temple Architecture:
The well-known Ahom King Rajeswar Singha commissioned Basistha Temple from 1851 to 1769. The Temple’s architecture has supplied by terracotta and stone sculptures that can witness inside the Temple and the hills and stones.
Also, the Temple has connected with the Maharishi Basistha of the Hindu epic Ramayana, who ended his life here. Apart from this, there are beautiful sculptures at his Temple placed on the tri-juncture of the hill streams, Sandhya, Lalita, and Kanta.
Basistha Temple History:
This Temple has described as one of the seven Shakti Peethas in the Kalika Purana. The site has proof of a stone temple around 1000-1100 CE. A brick temple built upon the remains of the stone temple of an earlier period.
It is an octagonal(eight-sided) temple with a polygonal sikhara over it. The Temple has a sunken garbhagriha which has a trust to have the foot impression of the sage Vasistha, who has a trust to have had his asrama in this region in the remote area past. Ahom king Swargadeo Rajeswar Singha built this octagonal brick temple in mid 18th century.
