According to legend, Shiva’s son Kartikeya killed the demon Tarakasura. Tarakasura was a devotee of the demon Mahadev. Through his devotion, he achieved power from Mahadev.
Due to the power of Tarakasura, the Devas were troubled in the battle of Dev-Demons. All the gods were distracted by the anger of Tarakasura. The commander of the gods was Parvati’s son Kartikeya. He killed Tarakasura.
After killing Tarakasura, Kartikeya learned he was a devotee of Mahadev. Shiva’s son was feeling sad in his heart. He went to Lord Vishnu and expressed his desire to make atonement.
Where Tarakasura had killed at the behest of Vishnu and asked to establish Shivling at the same place, Kartikeya, the commander of the Devas, established the Shivling at the same place, which is called Stambheshwar Mahadev.

Stambheshwar Mahadev Temple Disappear and Reappears Twice a Day:
The temple had located a few meters away from the seashore. Therefore, in times of high and low tide, it submerges and reappears. Since the level of the Arabian Sea rises twice during the day, the temple emerges and vanishes when the water recedes. The Garbha Griha, or sanctum sanctorum, gets entirely covered with the sea waters. Only the pinnacle of the temple structure remains above water.
