Madan Kamdev Temple | Timings, Discovery & Excavation:

Madan Kamdev Temple is an archaeological site in Baihata Chariali, Kamrup, Assam State. It has located on top of a hill called Diwangiri Hill. The Temple’s place dates back to the 9th and 10th century A.D. The excavation and descents date back to the Pala dynasty of Kamarupa. Temple Timings from 6:00 am to 9:00 pm throughout the week.

The most famous statues are of the Sun, Ganesha, and Vidyadhara. Excavations have revealed several masterpieces of stone sculpture here. Some are Uma Maheshwar’s embrace idols carved on the stones of medieval temples.

History of Madan Kamdev Temple:

Scattered on Dewangiri hillock, It is famous for its impressive archaeological ruins and stone sculptures. The detailed history of the temples’ origin has yet to discover. The temple complex has built in the 9th-10th century during the Pal dynasty of Kamarupa.

People were only aware of Madan Kamdev Temple in 1970 because the ruins have hidden in the trees and bushes of the thick forest. It has believed that Kama or Madan, the God of Love, was reborn at this Madan Kamdev Temple after being turned into ashes by the angry Lord Shiva.

One school believed that Madan was reborn and united to his wife Rati in this tiny hillock. Another school argues that Madan Kamdev is a romantic association with the place because of the numerous erotic sculptures.

Discovery and Excavation:

The Archaeological Directorate of Assam state took over the authority for this area In 1977. They started digging the statues under the control of Dr Pradeep Sharma. In addition to the main Temple, the team found ruins of 12 more temples. Analysis of the temples and the idols printed on the walls led them to conclude that they have constructed from the 10th to the 12th century of Madan Kamdev Temple. 

According to Dr Sharma, the Kamarupa kings of the Pala dynasty, namely Ratna Pala, Indra Pala and Go Pala, ordered the construction of these temples. A four-headed Shiva, Kalpavriksha, Saraswati, Sun various Apsara, Vishnu with six heads, Statues of Bhairav with six heads and various other statues of animals identified as being from here.

The Architecture of Madan Kamdev Temple:

Kamdev temple is the main Temple, with ruins of other huge and small temples divide around it. The team of the Architectural Directorate believe excavation may reveal twelve temples. Near Temple, an old lord Shiva temple known here as Gopeshwar has located in the Deuduar village. 

Nearby is a large cave, Parvati Guha (Parvati Cave), after his consort. The sculpture and intricate carvings are truly mesmerizing. The sculptures of Madan (God of love), elephants, lions, deities etc., are great specimens of architecture.
