According to legends, when Goddess Shakti defeated the demons, Nishumbha and Shumbha, their minister, Arunasura, fled and assembled more demons. He became the king of all these demons and started creating damage on Earth. The Gods stopped the rains from making the demons stop. However, it caused more damage because people on the planet were starving.
Maharishi Jabali requested God Brahma to help them by sending the sacred cow, Kamdhenu, to finish a ritual to please the Lords that had stopped the rains. Kamdhenu was not obtainable and decided to send her daughter, Nandini. However, she refused, angered the Maharishi, who cursed her for flowing as River Nandini on the planet.
Nandini, scared, pleaded with Goddess Shakti to help her. The Goddess promised Nandini she would take birth from her and help relieve herself of the curse. While all this happened, Arunasura started performing penance to seek immortality from God Brahma.
Upon getting this wish, Arunasura defeated God Indra, who requested Adishakti to assist him. Goddess Shakti agreed, but Arunasura had to become an atheist to beat him. Brihaspati helped Adishakti to make Arunasura transform into an atheist. Later on, Adishakti took the avatar of Mohini to divert Arunasura.
He fell for her and persuaded her, but she refused and entered a rock he broke. The Deity took the form of Bhramara, a bee, and stung him till he died. Sages and saints on Earth performed special pujas to celebrate this victory and established the Durga Parameshwari Temple in Kateelu.
