In 1953 the erstwhile Hyderabad government declared it a wildlife sanctuary due to its prosperous biodiversity. The sanctuary has special features spread across its length and breadth that one cannot fail to appreciate. Dayyum vaagu flows the river.
It is Beautiful and divided into two parts. Natural vegetation covers the sanctuary and elevates the scenic beauty of the place to a whole different level.
People from all over visit this beautiful place to relax and spend a pleasant day away from the fast and hectic life. The wildlife park has steep slopes and some gentle slopes, along with the historical significance of this Sarvai region and the presence of fossilized trees in the caves.
This natural park is spread over 806 square kilometres and is considered one of the rarest ecological regions worldwide. One-fourth of the sanctuary is covered by rising and falling plains and dense forest formations, while the remaining one-fourth consists of springs and streams.
Eturunagaram Wildlife Sanctuary is also famous for Asia’s largest tribal fair, known as Sammakka Sarakka Jatra, which had held every two years.
The wildlife sanctuary is dense with ephemeral teak forests and many exotic and rare wild animals like tiger, spotted deer, wolf, panther, nilgai, black buck, chinkara, giant squirrels, jackals, sloth bear and four-horned deer.

Flora and Fauna in Eturunagaram Wildlife Sanctuary
Eturunagaram Wildlife Sanctuary is home to a prosperous biodiversity of flora and fauna. Dry deciduous-style teak trees grow in abundance in the sanctuary, along with Terminalia, Pterocarpus or Mukwa, Bamboo and Madhuka, to name a few. It Spread over a huge area, and the sanctuary housed a wide variety of animals.
A flowing dayyum river stream provides strong support for the wildlife in the area. The place is home to carnivores, including tigers, black buck, sloth bears, four bicornate bovids, chinkara and chawsing. Populations of wild dogs or dholes, nilgai, Indian giant squirrels, sambar and spotted cervids are also declining.
The sanctuary is also known for housing the state’s largest Gaurs population, the Indian Bovid. All kinds of birds find their breeding grounds in the sanctuary and make their home here.
The forest comes alive with the constant chirping of these birds. The sanctuary has a huge reptile population and a healthy count of pythons, krait, robber crocodiles, and star and elapid snakes.
