History of Muramalla Temple

After Dakshayajna, Veerabhadra, on the wish of Sri Mahavishnu, attached a goat’s head to Dakshuna, resurrected Daksha and completed the Daksha Yajna by him. But the anger caused by Sati’s creation of fire and its burning did not calm down, no matter how much everyone tried. Hence, the gods and the trinity prayed to Adiparashakti, and Jaganmata sent one of her Shodasha arts in the name of Bhadrakali to pacify Veerabhadra.

Muramalla Temple

No matter how much Bhadrakali tried, Veerabhadra’s anger could not quench. As ‘asharabha sarabha’, Bhadrakali drowned in the nearby pond and appeared as a beautiful maiden. After Veerabhadra calmed down, the gods and goddesses married each other in the Gandharva style in the Munimandali area. Since then, a similar Gandharva Kalyanam every year.

Temple Construction

Purvadevalaya has formed in the sequence where this story took place. Over time, the old temple has washed away into the river due to floods and other natural calamities. Then the people of Komaragiri came out and ordered the temple’s reconstruction as per his permission to realize the dream of Sarabharajugari. When Sarabharajugaru and others tried to remove the Shiva linga from the previous temple, a ghostly voice has heard like this.

I told him that he should carry on the way to the Bhaneswara Swamy temple in Polavaram, that he would become unaccustomed to weight at some place on the way, and that he should build his temple there. When those carrying the Shivalinga in their hands reached a place in Muramalla village, they brought it down due to the immense weight they could not carry, and the temple into a gopura. Since then, every year, the Kalyana Mahotsavam has been held continuously.
