Kankalitala Temple Birbhum had situated on the banks of the Kopai River in the northeast of Bolpur, Birbhum district West Bengal. The Kankalitala temple is one of the 51 Shakti Peeth of Goddess Sati, where the waist of Mother Sati fell. The Kankalitala Temple’s Timings are 06:00 am to 08:00 pm.

Dedicated to Goddess Sati, the temple had considered among the 51 Shakti Peeth, which had spread across the Indian Subcontinent. According to religious texts, King Daksha, father-in-law of Lord Shiva, had organized a yajna. King Daksha did not send invitations to Lord Shiva and Mother Sati (daughter of King Daksha) because King did not consider Lord Shiva his equal.

When Goddess Sati learned about it, She felt terrible and decided to reach there in Yajna without invitation. Then, King Daksha insulted Lord Shiva at the yajna site, which Mata Sati could not bear, and she jumped into the Havan Kund.

Lord Shiva came to know about this, after which he reached there and took out the body of Goddess Sati from Havan Kund and started doing Tandava (the dance of destruction), which caused upheaval in the entire universe. Lord Vishnu divided the corpse of Goddess Sati into 51 parts from his Sudarshan Chakra to save the earth from the anger of Lord Shiva. The places where the parts of Sati’s body fell became the Shakti Peeth.

Kankalitala Temple Birbhum Architecture:

Kanikalitala Temple is the simplest of all Shakti-Peeths. The unadorned edficice with a pyramidical construction houses a portrait of Goddess Parvathi. The deity had, accompanied by Her dining consort Shambhu Baba or Ruru Bhairav, consecrated as a Shiva Lingam inside the Shiva Temple close to the entrance of the temple complex.

The temple complex houses a serene pond by the temple. The floors are with paved marble. But the Shiva lingam has placed under the ground, and devotees had to pour water and offerings on the pit of the broken Lingam.

Once, the Lingam used to be huge, but during the Muslim invasion during the 16th century by the notorious Kala Pahar, the Lingam broke. It is called the temple Kunda, where the body remains of Devi Sati fell.
