Adyapeath Temple Timings

The symbolism of the temple represents not only the unity of all aspects of the Hindu faith but also the unity of all religions towards a common goal: humanity’s realization of God. Its crest combines Shiva’s trident, moon and star, and cross and the hand fan—symbols of Hinduism, Islam, Christianity, and Buddhism, respectively.

The main altar of Adyapeath temple

The altar also takes on a very unusual configuration: three altars, one on the other, like a staircase. On the lower altar is a figure of Sri Ramakrishna. On the central altar is the puppet. Annada Thakur found Adya Ma Murthy in the Garden of Eden. This idol had made of eight metals. “Knowledge and Work” written nearby. At the top is an altar decorated with figures of Radha and Krishna, known as the divine couple throughout India.

Adyapeath Temple

They were surrounded by the sacred letter Om and the word “love” inscribed at their feet. Thus love is the most important virtue and the most straightforward path to God. It is unusual to find a single temple combining the worship of Kali (in the form of Adya Ma) and Radha-Krishna, usually worshipped by two different sects of Hinduism. However, once again, the Adyapeath temple erases the boundaries of denomination or religion and reveals that God is One.

The temple had been constructed so the altar had fully visible whenever the doors opened. Every day thousands of pilgrims and visitors gather to worship, offer prayers and darshan and receive prasadam. Religious songs and discourses had held daily in the nearby Nathmandir (music hall). Adyapeath had considered one of the holiest places in West Bengal and across the border.

Daily worship at Adyapeath Temple

Regular pujas had performed traditionally. The idols had bathed with love, clothed and offered flowers, sandalwood, incense and food.

Sri Ramakrishna instructed Annada Thakur in his dreams about the types and quantities of food offerings, and these instructions had strictly followed even today.

As the inside of the temple is tiny, food offerings had made in a separate building in the nearby bhog ghar so that the altar is fully visible. The food thus blessed distribute as prasad to all the visitors.
