The Idol of Goddess Mahalakshmi at Kallur is self – originated or Swayambhu. Legend says that the Idol had designed when the Old Priest of the Temple, LaxmiKant Acharya, extracted sandalwood paste as a daily ritual by rubbing Chandan sticks on a Sanekal( Black Stone).LaxmiKant Acharya was a staunch devotee of Goddess Lakshmi. 

Pleased with his prayers and devotion, the Goddess appeared in her form on the Sanekal when the Acharya rubbed Chandan Sticks as part of his daily rituals. The Goddess blessed him, appeared in his dream, and asked him to carry forward the legacy of worshipping her in the Years to come. 

Goddess filled Acharya’s heart with deep joy and gratitude. With folded hands and his eyes with tears, he could not believe the miracle unfolding before him. The Idol of Lord Venkateshwara, also in Sanekal beside Goddess Lakshmi, is also significant, and both the Lord and the Goddess had carved together in Sanekal at Kallur. Both idols are self-originated and worshipped daily with great Reverence, Faith and Devotion.
