History of the Chottanikkara Temple:

Chottanikkara Temple Timings

Adi Shankaracharya prayed and meditated for the Mahalakshmi Devi to appear before him. Then he asks the Devi to stay in the temple in Kerala state. The Devi agreed to him that he should not look back.

Adi Shankaracharya agreed and set off on foot to return to Kerala. As Mahalakshmi Devi moved behind him, he could hear the jingling of her anklets.

The sounds stopped at one point, and Adi Shankaracharya returned his gaze. According to the condition, the Goddess came to a halt and then transformed into a Murti at that location.

That is now the famous Mookambika temple in Udupi. Adi Shankaracharya appealed to the Goddess for pardon. Mahalakshmi Devi only came up to Chottanikkara, and the temple is presently there.
