To seek protection from the demon, all gods centralized their power, which led to the birth of an Adishakti, the Goddess Sati. The Prajapati Daksha raised the girl, and later, she married Lord Shiva.
Once, Prajapati Daksha organized a yagna and did not invite Lord Shiva. Parvati felt humiliated by her father’s act and burned herself in the fire of Havankund. Lord Shiva enrages and moves around three worlds with Sati’s charred body.
To see this, all the Gods approach Lord Vishnu seeking help. Lord Vishnu cuts Parvati’s body into pieces with his Sudharshan Chakra. The parts of her body fell in various places. Wherever the chips fell, those places are considered the Shaktipeethas. Jwalamukhi is the place where the tongue of Sati fell.
History of Jwalamukhi Temple Himachal Pradesh:
A king built the Temple. A cowherd complained to the King that a female emerged from the earth and fed on cow milk. As the King knew Sati’s legend, he searched for the place and built the Temple. He also appointed a priest to perform Poojas. Later, Pandavas renovated and maintained the Temple.
The history of the Jwalamukhi temple in the Shivalik Range tells that, once, the Mughal Emperor Akbar happened to visit Jwalamukhi temple and tried to do the flame, which he failed. Later, Akbar offered a golden umbrella to the Goddess. While leaving, he turned around to look at the umbrella and was surprised as the umbrella turned into copper.
In 1809, Maharaja Ranjit Singh visited the Jwalamukhi temple and gave the gilt roof. Kharak Singh, son of Ranjit Singh, presented a pair of silver-plated folding doors. In the royal era, the King of Naudan managed the Temple.
The King himself authorized the priests to the Temple. Now, the Temple is under the government. A portion of the Temple’s money was used to improve and maintain the facilities for the pilgrims.
Significance of the Jwalamukhi Temple:
Jwalamukhi temple is famous for not having any idols to worship. The roof of the Temple is a gilt dome with silver-plated folding doors. There is a three-foot square pit with a pathway, a hollow rock over the primary fissure of the flame in the centre. It is considered the mouth of Mahakali.
There are nine places in the pit from where the fire will emit. All the seats are the nine forms of the Goddess, namely Saraswati, Chandi, Annapurna, Hing Laj, Vindhya Vasini, Mahakali, Mahalakshmi, Ambika, and Anjana. There are lions at the entrance of the Temple. In the Jwalamukhi temple at the Shivalik range, the Goddess is worshipped as the Goddess of light.
