According to the great legend, the demon king Ravana was always a great devotee of Lord Shiva. To fulfil his desire of becoming the eternal king of Lanka, he prayed for Lord Shiva; as a part of it, he sacrificed his head in prayer. Pleased by his devotion, Lord Shiva, fulfilled his desire by giving him strength and Wisdom. He also gave his head back and became the ‘God of Healing’.

Then, Ravana asked him to accompany him to Lanka. After reaching Lanka, the deity became a Shiva lingam and told him to put it down. Lord Vishnu and Lord Bramha were worried and created a massive storm. Due to this, he gave the Shivalingam to the beggar and went to attend nature’s call. The beggar was Lord Vishnu in disguise and put the Shivalingm on the ground and became immovable. This place is now called as Baijnath temple.
