Gnana Saraswati Basara Temple

The temple is on the river Godavari of Nirmal District, Telangana State. The primary deity of this temple is Goddess Saraswathi, the Goddess of Knowledge. It is one of the two temples of Goddess Saraswathi in Kashmir called Sharada Peeta.

Famous Basara Temple History:

When it comes to the legend behind the temple, After the ferocious Kurukshetra War, Sage Vedavyasya came to the Dandaka forest on the coast of the Godavari river along with his son Shakuni to live a peaceful life. He was pleased with the beauty of the place and decided to have shelter there.

Meanwhile, Vedavyasya dreamed of building a temple for three Goddess Jaganmata. After that, he brought three hands full of dunes and made three goddess deities with the sand. Since then, the three deities have been coated with turmeric and worshipped. There is a belief that whoever eats the piece of turmeric coated with gods will gain more knowledge and intelligence.

The place was called Vasara of Vyasya Sage; with the influence of some Maharastra people, the temple was named Basara.

They also believe that the place where Valmiki wrote Ramanyanam is dedicated to Goddess Saraswathi. We can also find a marble tomb of the Valmiki sage near the temple.

History says that a Karnataka King named Bijjaludu constructed this temple in the 6th century because he was the ruler of Nandagiri in that period.
