Aksharabhyasam

The Basara temple is one of India’s two famous Saraswati temples, the other being the Sarada Peetha. Saraswati is the Hindu Lord goddess of knowledge and wisdom. Children were brought to the temple for alphabet-learning ceremonies.

Basar is a town in the Nirmal district of the state of Telangana. It is about 30 kilometres from Bhainsa, 15.5 kilometres from Dharmabad, 34.8 kilometres from Nizamabad, 96.0 kilometres from Nanded, 70 kilometres from the district headquarters Nirmal and 205 kilometres from Hyderabad.

History of Basara Temple:

According to the Mahabharata, after the Kurukshetra war, Sage Vyasa, his disciples, and Sage Vishwamitra settled in a calm and peaceful environment. In search of a peaceful paradise, he came across the Dandaka forests and chose it, impressed by the serenity. As Maharishi Vyasa spent a lot of time in prayer, the place became known as “Vasara”, which later became Basara due to the influence of the Marathi language in the region.

This Basara temple is also believed to be one of the three built around the confluence of the Manjira and Godavari rivers. Historically, the temple at Basara was built in the sixth century by the Karnataka king ‘Bijialudu’, who ruled the Nandagiri province with Nanded as his capital.

After destruction by Muslim invaders, the temple idols were restored in the 17th century by the ruler of Nandagiri (Nanded). Many pilgrims visit the Jnana Saraswati Temple in Basar to perform the “Akshara Prajma” ceremony for children before they begin formal schooling. Children practice the alphabet and dedicate books, pens, pencils and notebooks to the Goddess of Knowledge.

Pujas and Festivals at Basara Temple

Pujas in the Basars Temple begin at 4 am with Abhishekam and continue for an hour. At 5 pm, they started the decoration, in which new sarees were decorated for the deities.

The entire atmosphere is holy and pure. At 6 am, Harati is performed in the temple, which Prasad distributes to the devotees.

During Maha Shivratri, the temple conducts special pujas and celebrations that begin 15 days before (Vasanta Panchami) and end three days after the festival. During Dussehra, Devi Navratri was held for ten days.

The temple also has an idol of Mahankali on the first level next to the main temple. Devotees often visit the neighbouring mountain, on top of which is a statue of Goddess Saraswati.

In the sanctum sanctorum is an image of Lakshmi and Goddess Saraswati. Basara is considered the abode of the divine trinity due to the presence of Saraswati, Lakshmi and Kali.

Ticket Price

Since this is a special darshan, the ticket price is enormous,
Rs 1000 for children and parents.
Rs 100 for each additional person.

Note: No pre-booking or online booking is required. You can go directly to the temple during the visiting hours, and then you can perform puja based on your ticket selection. The child should be 2.5 years or above to complete this pooja.

Aksharabhyasam at Basara Temple Procedure

Be prepared with all the arrangements and attire in a traditional suit for all the worshipers during the Literacy Day celebration.
Follow the instructions of the priest and repeat the mantra after him.
According to the rules, the child holds a plate full of rice grains on a basin or slate.
The priest, accompanied by the parents, took a child by the hand and began to write with them.
O.M. is the first word written by children.
Literacy is conducted daily only on the temple premises.
If the devotee chooses a ticket of Rs.100, they will conduct Aksharabhasha in the hall.
If the devote chooses the ticket for Rs. 1000, it will be conducted in front of the Sri Gnana Saraswati goddess.
One child and the child’s parents are allowed with a single ticket.
Additional Person Rs. 100 to let them with you.
The ceremony concludes with the offering of Prasadam or Nivedya.
