According to legend, Goddess Parvati used sandalwood to create Ganesha while her husband, Lord Shiva, was away. She designated Ganesha to look over her house’s entrance while bathing. 

When Shiva returned, Ganesha blocked Shiva from entering the building, eager to meet Parvati. It caused the two of them to fight. 

He initially makes useless attempts to persuade the boy. Shiva, the God of destruction, cuts off Ganesha’s head.

When Goddess Parvati caught sight of this scene, she transformed into Kali and declared that she would end the world. Everyone was concerned and prayed to God Shiva to find a solution and overcome Goddess Kali’s rage.

Shiva then told all his followers to run off and find a child whose mother was careless, turning her back on her child and bringing his head. 

Shiva’s followers saw the first child as an elephant, so they cut off his head and brought it to God Shiva as instructed.

God Shiva immediately placed the head on Ganesha’s body and then revived it. Parvati was once more overpowered as Kali’s rage subsided. 

Ganapati or Ganesha, the chief of the ganas or the attendants of Lord Shiva, was welcomed into the first family of the heavens and given the elephant-headed God’s name.

After dropping the Peshwas, the celebrations became a family affair in Maharashtra.

The freedom fighter Lokmanya Tilak rescued this festival in 1893 and transformed it from a yearly domestic celebration to a big public event. 

At a time when the British government banned social and political assemblies in India, the celebration provoked patriotic sentiments. It reunited people from all castes and communities against colonial rule.
