The temple is part of a formidable trio that includes Ettumanoor Siva Temple and Kaduthuruthy Thaliyil Mahadeva Temple. People believe that the Shiva Linga here is from the Treta Yuga. This temple is one of Kerala’s oldest temples, with no pooja violated since its beginning.

History:

According to mythology, after obtaining the Saiva Vidya Upadesam from Malyavan (Ravana’s great-grandfather). An asura named Khara, a great devotee of Lord Shiva, travelled to Chidambaram and performed extreme penance to gain moksha. Lord Shiva was so pleased with his penance. Hence, he granted all of the boons he requested and gave him three enormous Shiva Lingas.

Vaikkathappan

Khara was coming south from Kailash with the three Lingas in his hands. He carried one in his right, one in his left, and the other around his neck. He became exhausted and put the Lingas down to rest.

The Lingas wouldn’t move as he tried to pick them up. Khara then entrusted the Lingas to Maharshi Vyaghrapada, who was accompanying him and instructed the sage to protect and worship them.
