History of Vaikom Temple:

According to mythology, after obtaining the Saiva Vidya Upadesam from Malyavan (Ravana’s great-grandfather). An asura named Khara, a great devotee of Lord Shiva travelled to Chidambaram and performed extreme penance to gain moksha. Lord Shiva was so pleased with his penance. Hence, he granted all the requested boons and gave him three enormous Shiva Lingas.

Khara was coming south from Kailash with the three Lingas in his hands. He carried one on his right, one on his left, and the other around his neck. He became exhausted and put the Lingas down to rest.

The Lingas wouldn’t move as he tried to pick them up. Khara then entrusted the Lingas to Maharshi Vyaghrapada, who accompanied him and instructed the sage to protect and worship them.
