Vadakkunathan! People gave this name to Lord Shiva in Thrissur, Kerala, India. Lord Parasurama built the Vadakkunnathan temple as the first of his temples. The temple has enormous stone walls that cover an area of around eight acres.
The four Gopurams within the temple grounds denote the temple’s four orientations, East, West, North, and South. A multi-shrined complex, in addition to the four Gopurams, is located in the heart of the temple.
People worship the Vadakkunatham, Lord Shiva, Lord Rama, and Shankaranarayana in the temple’s three main shrines. Lord Shiva, also known as the Vettekkaran in his hunter form.
History:
After many years of prayer to Vadakkunathan, Adi Sankara was born to Aryamba and Shivaguru. He was born as Lord Kalady’s incarnation.
Lord Shiva appeared in the husband and wife’s dreams, inviting them to choose a child for them. He gave them the option of choosing between a son who will perform well in life but live a longer life or a son who will be exceptionally smart but live a shorter life.
After deliberation over several days, the couple decided on the one with great brilliance but a shorter life span.

The temple is open for visiting every day of the week, and the timings are as follows.
Morning: 4:00 Am to 10:00 Am
Evening: 5:00 Pm to 8:20 Pm
There are some restrictions for the devotees in the Vadakkunnathan temple. They are
- Children below one year are not allowed into the temple.
- The devotees should visit the temple in the traditional dress code.

The architecture of the temple:
A circular construction featuring the deity’s idol is on the temple’s northern side, facing the god. Lord Shiva and Parvati’s idol faces East in the same temple and is right behind the Shiva idol. The double-storied Shri Rama’s shrine, which faces west, is located on the southern side.
In between these two Srikolvils, a third one is round in shape and has a double floor dedicated to worshipping Sankaranarayan and faces west. Apart from that, Mukhamandapams stand in front of the three shrines in the centre.
