The Rockfort Temple Complexity has three shrines, two dedicated to Lord Ganesha, the Manikka Vinayagar Temple at the foot and the Uchi Pillayar Temple Rockfort at the top of Tayumanavar Temple between them.
The Thaimanavar Temple, the most significant of the three, houses the Amman (goddess) and the main deity.
According to legends, this rock is where King Ganesh fled from Vibhishana after establishing the deity Ranganathaswamy in Srirangam.
According to epigraphic sources, the hill fort temple was built in the 6th century under the patronage of Mahendra Pallava-Gunaparan. Uchi Pillaiyar Temple is located at the top of Rock Fort Hill.
The sanctuary is 273 feet high, and you must climb 400 steps to reach the temple. You have to cross the Sri Tayumanavar Temple about halfway up. Although the climb is challenging, the gentle breeze refreshes our energy so that we can climb without much pressure.
The panoramic view of the entire Tiruchirappalli and Srirangam temple from the Uchi Vinayakar Temple is spectacular.
History
When Lord Rama returned to Ayodhya after rescuing Sita from the captivity of Ravana, Sugriva, Hanuman, and Vibhishana accompanied the Lord to participate in the coronation ceremony.
Vibhishana came to the south with the idol of Sri Ranganatha as a gift from Sri Rama. The attractiveness of the Cauvery River and the scenic atmosphere made him want to relax for a while. There, Ganesha was disguised as a small child.
He asked the boy to take back Ranganath’s idol. After waiting for Vibhishana, the boy placed the idol. Vibhishana was shocked to see that the boy was missing.
He used all his strength to move the statue but failed. Thus, Lord Ranganatha, going to Sri Lanka, shortened his journey and chose Sri Ranga as his abode.
Vibhishana saw the boy on the hill and hit him on the head, his scar still visible on the idol of Vinayaka. Therefore, Lord Ganesha and Ranganatha will gracefully rule us in the Ucchi Pillayar temple.
Rockfort Temple
There was fierce competition between the Adishesha and the Vayu to determine the supremacy of their merit, a situation where Mount Kailash had to shake violently. While blowing Adiseshu, a part fell here when the air broke the mountain.
A demon named Tirishira (a three-headed monster) is doing penance for Lord Shiva. Although many years had passed, Lord Shiva delayed his darshan to test his purity.
He threw his two heads into the fire and was about to throw the third one. The Lord appeared in front of him and restored his head.
As he requested, Lord Shiva agreed to stay here on behalf of Tirisira Nathar (based on the story of the Tirisira monster). This place was called Tirishiramalai and is now known as Tiruchirappalli.
