History Of The Temple

Once, a hunter came to this place for hunting. He found a bird and chased it. The bird noticed that and hid behind the Shiva Lingam to save its life. Lord Shiva appeared in front of the hunter and asked him not to kill the bird and take his brain instead. The hunter obeyed and took Lord Shiva’s brain by inserting his fingers. From then, there were holes in Shiva Lingam. Soon after the incident, Goddess Ganga elevated from the holes.

Sri Shankaracharya once visited the temple with his followers. He wanted to know the reason behind the holes; he inserted a spoon tied with thread into the hole. The spoon went deep and stopped at a point. They pulled the spoon with the line and found blood strains on that. Shankaracharya realized his mistake and confessed it to Lord Shiva, then left.
