Samayapuram Mariamman Temple | Timings & History

The Samayapuram temple is located in the Samayapuram in Tiruchirapalli district of Tamil Nadu state. The presiding deity in the temple is the goddess Shakthi/Mariamman, the avatar of the mother goddess, Durga Matha. The temple is famous for the goddess Shakthi in Tamil Nadu. Arulmigu Mariamman temple timings are from 5:30 AM to 9 PM.

Like most deities, the deity’s idol is a mixture of sand and clay. In the early 18th century, King Vijayaraya built this Mariamman temple in Tamil Nadu. The devotees fondly call goddess Mariamman” Amma.” So, refer to this page for timings and online booking, etc.

History of the Temple

According to history, the deity was situated at the Ranganathaswamy temple in the 17th century in Srirangam. One of the priests complained that the goddess idol caused him illness.

So, they removed the idol from the Ranganathaswamy temple, Srirangam. They have constructed another temple called Kannur Mariamman temple.

Later, the Vijayanagar kings ruled Thiruchirapalli. They committed to building a temple for the goddess if they won the war.

As they won the battle, they constructed the Mariamman temple near Thiruchirapalli.

Significance of Goddess Shakthi or Mariamman

The Arulmigu Mariamman temple is the symbol of the native culture. It is a widespread belief that the goddess protects her devotees and has a superpower to cure illness.

The diety’s holy days are Sunday, Tuesday and Friday. There will be more floating to the temple during these days.

Devotees offer Maavilakku, i.e. a lamp made of rice flour, jaggery, and ghee. Some people also provide rock salt to the goddess.

People suffering from measles come here to stay and cure themselves. They leave the place after recovery. As we know, they have a superpower to cure the illness.

Many people come here to cure their diseases. Hence, there is a separate resting hall for them to stay. So, they offer metallic replicas of various body parts in the donation box.

Uniquenes of Arulmigu Mariamman Temple:

The main unique thing about the Mariamman temple is that the priests perform the Abhishekam to the deity in most Hindu temples.

But in the Mariamman temple, the priests do not conduct Abhishekam to Goddess Shakthi. They do Abhishekam to the small stone idol in front of the deity.

The heritage of the Mariamman temple has spread to other parts of the world. People who migrated from Tamil Nadu to Sri Lanka, Singapore, South Africa, etc., still maintain their culture and build similar temples at their places.

  1. Local people and VIPs can easily enter inside but the people who spent like kattalai cannot see the god easily. They will divert us to all the entrances. we are spending money like KATTALAI to darshan should be easy and quick.Yearly once we have to get the darshan easy and quick, for that purpose only we have paid. But they are keeping rules for those people who spent money. Please consider them and remove those such rules and allow them to get darshan soon. The concern authority should take necessary action regarding this
