History

According to history, the worship of the Goddess belongs to the Vedic period and Ekeshwaropasana to the Advaita period. Kanyakumari Devi is mentioned in the Ramayana, the Mahabharata and the Sangam Manimekalai.

Kanyakumari Devi’s personal story is that once Banusura, the demon king, gained power over the gods and brutally punished them.

The gods performed a yajna to punish and remove the bugs.

So Devi Parasakti came to Kumari as a virgin and started penance. Meanwhile, god Shiva fell in love with her and arranged for a wedding on a particular day at midnight.

Now Narada realises that he is destroying the chances of killing Banusura because only a virgin can kill him. As Lord Shiva was on his way to Kanyakumari, Maharshi Narada, disguised as a hen, was lying and screaming at dawn. Thinking that the marriage ceremony was over, Lord Shiva turned away in frustration.

After that, Devi also decided to be a virgin. Then, when Banusura tried to force God to win, she killed him with her chakra and eliminated the suffering of the gods. Then she continued her penance and remained a virgin.

Significance of Kanyakumari Kumari Amman Temple:

The significance of Kumari Amman Temple is that it is one of the 51 Shakti Peethas – or the divine abode of Shakti Devi. One of the One Hundred and Eight “Durga Temples”, this temple is dedicated to Goddess Durga.

According to Sri Ramakrishna Paramahamsa, Swami Vivekananda visited this temple in December 1892. Kanyakumari Devi’s nose ring had designed with rubies. They are very bright and can be seen from a great distance at night.

It had said that some ships sailing in the sea mistaken the brightness of the rubble for light coming from the lighthouse and crashed into nearby rocks. Due to this, the gate on the east side of the Kumari Amman temple was closed.
