The city’s architectural gem dedicate to Dharmanath, the 15th Tirthankar. He was the son of King Bhanu of Ratnapura, who attained salvation at Srikanki.
History
Sheth Hutheesing Kesarisinh, a wealthy Jain businessman, wanted to build a holy Jain temple. However, he died at 49 before he could fulfil his dream.
His third wife, Shethani Harkunwar, took charge of the work and supervised the temple construction.
Shethani Harkunwar was actively involved in developing the temple and started building sub-halls in the basement when Hutheesing was seriously ill and named after a generous merchant.
The famous temple was constructed in 1848 AD at a huge cost of Rs. 8 lakhs. Hughesingh’s son Muggenbhai Hutzingh co-founded Lockwood de Forest in 1881 with a new venture called the Ahmedabad Woodcarving Company.
According to Lockwood de Forest, the cost of the temple is estimated to be more than a million dollars. The drought adversely affected Gujarat during the sacred complex’s development.
It was confirmed to be a boon for the artists constructing the temple. Most of the deployed artists are from the Sompura and Salat communities.
Sompura artists are renowned for their skill in stone carving and sculpture and are especially interested in making statues in Hindu and Jain temples. Legend has it that the 170-year-old lamp under the sanctum sanctorum is still burning.

Often referred to as a period of honour found in Jain temples, the pillars had been believed to remove their pride when pilgrims entered the synagogue called Samavasarana.
In 2003, a monument was erected in front of the Hutheesing Jain Temple to mark the 2500th birth anniversary of Mahavira. This sacred complex had topped with a huge twelve-ring semi-circular dome supported by eight pillars.
The crown is 80 feet in diameter and 350 meters high. There are five deities in the three-bay structures and six in the two sub-halls in the basement. On the way around, an impressive idol of various Tirthankaras had installed in the 52 shrines known as Devikulas.
It has an octagonal guide mandapa twice the size of a shrine. The magnificent three domes on the sanctum sanctorum add to the beauty of the temple.
