History of Ekambareshwara temple

It became utterly dark on earth for many years. As a result, Goddess Parvati went to land and created the earth lingam, worshipped under the mango tree in Kanchipuram, and gave birth to the temple.

What is the significance of Ekambareshwara Temple?

The Ekambareshwara Temple is one of the 32 Thevara sites built in the Thondai area. It is the most prominent Lord Shiva temple in Kanchipuram.

The Somaskanda panel comprising Shiva, Parvati and Skanda adorn the back of the main shrine. In 1509, King Krishnadevaraja of the Vijayanagara kingdom built a 60-meter-high tower.

The temple precinct has a hall of 540 pillars, beautifully designed and carved. The Vijayanagara emperor built a temple of posts. The 3500-year-old mango tree adores the sanctum sanctorum, with four branches dedicated to the four Vedas.
