According to history, Muthappan has been in a tribal family since birth. As a result, when he arrived in Kunnathurpadi, he made a tribal man named Chantan his friend.
One day, Muthappan found Chantan tapping toddy from the palm tree. So, he asked Chantan for Toddy but refused to give Toddy to Muthappan.
So, Muthappan, out of anger, cursed his friend Chantan and suddenly turned into a stone. In Dhanu, his wife prayed and pledged to do the Oottu, Tiruvappana, and Amruthakalasam rituals to propitiate Muthappan.
Muthappan returned her husband to her. Chantan family started worshipping Muthappan.
According to another legend, In the absence of Chantan, Muthappan climbed the coconut tree and emptied the toddy jug.
When Chantan returned and found Muthappan holding the jar, he became enraged and confronted him. Muthappan cursed Chantan at that exact moment.
