Chilkur Balaji temple is in a beautiful village Chilkur which is 42 km from Hyderabad. Chilkur Balaji temple is on the bank of Osman Sagar Lake. The main deity of the temple is Lord Sri Balaji Venkateswara along with Sridevi Bhoodevi, a rare combination. Chilkur temple is an alternative for Tirumala Temple. Every week nearly 1 Lakh devotees visit the temple, more on weekends. This temple is one of the oldest temples in Telangana. The temple was built a half-millennium ago, i.e. nearly 500 years ago. Chilkur temple is the only temple without Hundis and donations in the temple. The temple is not under the government and there are no VIP privileges.

History of Chilkur Balaji Temple

There was a devotee who visits Tirupati, for Lord Venkateswara Swamy darshan every year, he can’t visit Tirupati because of his illness. Lord Venkateswara moved by his devotion appeared in his dreams, instructed him to find his idol, and construct the temple. As indicated by Lord Venkateswara the devotee found a molehill. He started digging the hill, the axe struck the Lord Balaji’s Chin and on the chest and the blood started flowing. The devotee was surprised and shocked by seeing the ground with blood. Then he heard a voice saying “flood the mole with cow’s milk”. The devotee did so and the Swayambu Idol of Lord Balaji with Sridevi and Bhoodevi were found, the devotee then built the temple.

Rituals at Chilkur Temple

The temple was built during the time of Akkanna and Madanna uncles of Bhakta Ramdas. Many people who cannot visit Tirupati come here for Chilkur Balaji Darshan. The Balaji is popular as Visa God or Visa Balaji Temple. Many devotees come and pray here for getting visas. In Chilkur temple devotees follow a pattern for praying. They pray for a wish with 11 pradakshinas to Lord Balaji, after the wish fulfilled they perform 108 pradakshinas to show their gratitude. 11 means “1 body and 1 soul”, 108 means “1 as the existence of almighty, 0 as creation and 8 as the time taken by the human body to come into the Universe”. The rounds are done with chantings and mantras. The highly educated priests talk live by motivating the devotees in English and Telugu.

The devotees come early in the morning for doing pradakshinas till the late night. The temple is full of positivity and a peaceful atmosphere. All the devotees visit the temple mainly on the occasions of Anakota, Poolangi, and Brahmotsavams every year. Apart from devotees, many spiritual and religious gurus also visit the temple. Few of the gurus are Jeer of Sri Ahobila Mutt, Tilakayaths of Shri Vallabhacharya Sampradaya, . Jagadguru Sri Sankaracharya of Sringeri Mutt and many others. We can find the other temples of Hanuman, Shiva, and Ganesh on the premises of the Temple.

How to Reach Chilkur Balaji Temple Hyderabad

By Air: The temple is about 20kms from the Shamshabad International Airport. Various buses and taxis are available to reach the temple.

By Train: The nearest railway station to the temple is the Himayat Nagar Railway station junction. The station is connected to many regions within the state.

By Bus: TSRTC buses are available from Hyderabad Bus Station. From Mehdipatnam buses are available every 10 minutes.
