History of Chilkur Balaji Temple

A devotee visits Tirupati for Lord Venkateswara Swamy darshan every year, but he can’t visit Tirupati because of his illness. Lord Venkateswara, moved by his devotion, appeared in his dreams, instructed him to find his idol, and construct the Temple. As indicated by Lord Venkateswara, the devotee found a molehill. He started digging the hill, the axe struck Lord Balaji’s chin and the chest, and the blood flowed. The devotee was surprised and shocked by seeing the ground with blood. Then he heard a voice saying, “flood the mole with cow’s milk”. The devotee did so, and the Swayambu Idol of Lord Balaji with Sridevi and Bhoodevi were found; the devotee then built the Temple.

Rituals at Chilkur Temple

The Temple was built during Akkanna and Madanna, the uncles of Bhakta Ramdas. Many people who cannot visit Tirupati come here for Chilkur Balaji Darshan. The Balaji is famous as Visa God or Visa Balaji Temple. Many devotees come and pray here for getting visas. In the Chilkur temple, devotees follow a pattern for praying. They pray for a wish with 11 pradakshinas to Lord Balaji; after the desire is fulfilled, they perform 108 pradakshinas to show gratitude. 11 means “1 body and one soul”, 108 means “1 as the existence of almighty, 0 as creation and eight as the time taken by the human body to come into the Universe”. The devotees do the rounds with chantings and mantras. The highly educated priests talk live by motivating the devotees in English and Telugu.
