According to Hindu mythology, there is an exciting history behind the Bagnath temple, and Rishi Markandeya worshipped Lord Shiva here. Lord Shiva came here as a tiger and mother Parvati as a cow and blessed Rishi Markandeya. 

Rishi Markandeya swami has celebrated as a devotee of Lord Shiva and Lord Vishnu according to several accounts from the Puranas (some reports state that the Temple has built in the 7th century AD).

It needs a solution from him, so immediately Shiva and mother Paravati revealed. Bhumi from the tiger and the cow, with roars of the tiger and screams of the cow, sage Vashishta rushed from there, saving the cow from the tiger’s clutches.

Thus, the temple emerged at the confluence of two rivers Sarayu and her sister Gomati.
