There is a beautiful meaning to the name ‘Vishnumaya’, which is precisely the amalgam of ‘Shiva’. This deity is the wild prowess of the powerful goddess Laxmi and ‘Vishnu’. Where ‘Maya’ means the spirit of Goddess Parvathi, combined with the Vishnumaya describing the Shakthi and Sthiti. One of the reasons this temple is called Avanangattu is that this temple is surrounded by Ricinus, ‘Avanaku’ in Malayalam.

This historic temple is located in a remote area of Kerala, and it has ancient Shaktheyam costumes, the ancient traditions rarely seen in contemporary temples. Devotees also call this temple Avanangattikalari, where Kalari means the traditional Kerala Martial arts. History of Avanangattu Vishnumaya Temple:

The legend says a man named Avnangattil Panicker In Kizhakkummuri village in Thrissur village. He resided with his family in a settlement area with temples and the Avanakku trees. Later, they cleared the forest to build a place for Kalari training.

They don’t have children, so he worships their family god and is blessed with twins Unnithaman and Kelunni. After time passed, the twins lost their father and grew up with their uncle and Mon, who were training the Kalari. As they started their own martial arts place, they were incited with jealousy. Then, they were affected by the evil spirits, and they decided to worship God for their self-protection and started praying for Lord Ganesha. Lord Ganesha blessed the brothers, but the evil power grew stronger.
