Amer Shila Devi Temple | History, Timings & Address

The Amer Shila Devi temple houses the famous Durga statue in the Amber Fort. Maharaja Mansingh had believed to have brought the Shilamatha idol from Jessore, Bangladesh, in 1604. Amer Shila Devi temple timings are from 6:00 am to 12:00 pm and 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm.

About Amer Shila Devi temple

According to legend, the goddess appeared in his dream and asked him to retrieve her idol lying under the sea near Jessore (now in Bangladesh). According to the orders, the idol had been removed from the sea as a stone (slab).

Amer Shila Devi Temple

Amber was brought to the fort and cleaned and washed there. The result of this process is the statue as it stands today. Hence it is called Shila Mata. It took ten years to build the temple.

History of Amer Shila Devi Temple

Amer Shila Mata Temple, also known as Kali Temple, had built in the 16th century by Maharaja Man Singh, a great devotee of Goddess Kali. It had said that he worshipped the goddess for victory in battles. 

The temple had located in the Amber Palace complex. Legend has it that Maharaja Man Singh I worshipped the deity for victory in his war against the rulers of Bengal. This temple had named after Shila Devi. 

Shila means the slab of stone from which the idol was polished. It has an image of Lord Ganesha over the door, exquisitely carved from a piece of coral.

Significance of Shila Devi Temple

The interior of this magnificent temple is not only very attractive and unusual but also houses some traditional artefacts. The main gate of this temple had made of silver. At the entrance, a gate door covers all the many characters of “Maa Durga”.

Nav Durga, Brahmacharini, Chandraghanta, Kushmanda, Skandamata, Katyani, Kalaratri, Maha Gauri and Siddhidatri had depicted on the silver door. 

The characters of ten famous idols, namely Kali, Tara, Chinnamasta, Tripura Bhairavi, Dhumavati, Baglamukhi, Sri Matangi, Shodashi, Bhuvaneshwari and Kamala Devi, are painted in modest size over the main entrance. At the temple’s main entrance is Lord Ganesha’s large painted idol.

 Also, take an elephant ride inside the Amer fort if travelling with kids. If it’s late, you can join the evening light shows available in English and Hindi.

 Jaigarh Fort: 

Jaigarh Fort had located near Amer Fort. In 1726 Sawai Jai Singh II built the fort to protect Amer Fort. It is also known as Victory Fort, on a high hill called Cheel Ka Teela or Hill of Eagles.

Jagat Shiromani Temple: 

The Jagat Shiromani Temple in Amer had dedicated to Meera Bai, Lord Sri Krishna, and Lord Vishnu. Raja Man Singh’s first wife, Rani Kankawati, built this temple between 1599 and 1608 AD. The temple had located at a distance of 400 meters from Amer Fort.

Nahargarh Fort: 

Nahargarh Fort had also built to protect Amer Fort. Its original name was Sudarshangarh, which eventually changed to Nahargarh, meaning “abode of tigers”. Sawai Jai Singh II built the fort in 1734. Sawai Ram Singh enlarged the fort in 1868, while Sawai Madho Singh built several palaces between 1883 and 1892.

Panna Meena Ka Kund: 

It has two other names: Panna Mians Baori and Panna Mians Kund. Amer Fort is 0.6 km from this place. The Anokhi Museum is adjoining the Kund and had built in the 16th century as a swimming pool and resting place. They come here in summer because the ground is very cold in the afternoon.

Jal Mahal: 

Jal Mahal had located in the middle of Man Sagar Lake, about 1.9 km from Amer. Raja Jai Singh II built the palace as his residence in the 18th century. Rajput and Mughal architecture is spread beautifully inside the building.
