According to inscriptions, the Temple was built by Nandiyarma III from 846 to 869 and later restored by the Pallavas and the Cholas.

Significance of Vamana Avatar

According to the Ulagalantha Perumal Temple significance, the Vamana Avatar of Vishnu is none other than a humble Brahmin priest. He took this incarnation to restore the power of Lord Indira in heaven by defeating Mahabali.

Mahabali is the grandson of none other than Pragalatan. Bali was enthusiastic and determined to conquer heaven and earth, unlike his grandfather.

He finally overthrew Lord Indira, took charge of heaven and earth, and was hailed as a great sacrifice by his followers. To restore Dharma and save the world from the evil hands of Mahabali, Vishnu took the form of a humble Vamana.

Since Mahabali was his devotee, Vishnu did not want to kill him. Instead, he wanted to teach him a lesson. Mahabali was doing his Upanayana on a good day, and Vishnu Vamana approached Mahabali for a grant.

Mahabali smiled at his slight figure and promised to fulfil any wish he had. The humble Vamana asked for a three-foot piece of land across from him, and the whole royal court laughed when this little Vamana asked for a three-foot piece of land.

But for their entertainment, the Vamana covered one whole heaven, the second foot covered the whole earth, and the third had no place.

Realizing that this Vamana was none other than Mahavishnu himself, Mahabali gave his head to put Vamana on the third leg. Thus, Vamana pushed Mahabali to the path of the world (hell) and saved heaven and earth.
