Thirunelli comes from the Malayalam/Tamil word Nelli, an Indian gooseberry (Amla) tree. Lord Brahma once observed an idol of Lord Vishnu resting on an amla tree in the valley while wandering the globe. So, people gave the place the name Thirunelli.
The Padma Purana (authored by Veda Vyasa) is a lovely Vishnu temple in the gorgeous Sahya valley deep in the jungle. Amalaki temple and Sidha temple are other names for the Thirunelli temple.
According to legend, Chera king Kulasekharan founded the temple. Between 767 and 834 A.D., he was alive. After a brief reign, he abandoned the throne and began missionary work to spread the Vaishnava religion.
