History

In the 12th century, King Kumarpal of Solanki, who resided in Patan, himself a Swetambara Jain, chose this site to build an exceptionally beautiful temple in honour of Adinath.

Under the inspiration and guidance of Kalikalasarvajna Acharyasree Hemachandracharya, the King Kumarpal temple was built in the year 1200 in the Vikrama era. ‘Tarangir’ is one of the 108 names of Siddhachas. For this reason, the Taranga Jain temple is considered the peak of Siddhachas.

Taranga Temple Architecture

The temple is 50 feet long, 100 feet wide, and 142 feet high (15 m x 30 m x 43 m) in the centre of the spacious main square, 230 feet long and 230 feet (70m square) wide.

It has a circumference of 639 feet (195m). The 275m (902 ft) tall Taranga Temple has a magnificently carved wooden spire. It has a total of seven gopurams.

On the right side of the Mandir, there are idols of Lord Adinath’s feet and 20 great idols of Bhagavan. Thumukhji Temple, Samavarasan (open lecture hall) and Jambudweepa painting are on the left.

On the platform outside the main temple, there are idols of Padmavati Devi and Kumarpal Maharaja. King Kumarpal also built the Adinath temple on the Shatrunjay Mountain near Palitana a few years before the Tharanga temple.

Built of light sandstone, the Taranga Jain Temple is 45 meters long and 30.4 meters wide, reaching an imposing height of 30.6 meters (148 feet by 100 feet by 100 feet).

Its plan and design resemble the Neminath temple on Mount Girnar and the Adinath, as mentioned earlier, the temple on Mount Shatrunjaya.

On the highest point of the three-peaked hill is a small building in the art of a Muslim mausoleum known as the Tonk. Built by the Digambaras, it houses a marble statue of Mallinathji, the 19th Tirthankara.
