According to Hindu mythology, this sacred temple holds a captivating tale that revolves around Lord Murugan, the warrior deity and son of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati.
Legend has it that during the Krita Yuga, when righteousness prevailed, the demon king Surapadma grew increasingly powerful and began tormenting the celestial beings and sages. The gods, unable to withstand Surapadma’s tyranny, sought the help of Lord Brahma, the creator of the universe.
In response to the gods’ plea, Lord Brahma created divine weapons for the gods to use against the demon king. However, Surapadma was blessed with a boon that granted him invincibility against all weapons. The gods then turned to Lord Shiva for guidance and protection.
To defeat Surapadma, Lord Shiva manifested himself as Shanmughanathar, a six-faced deity, with each face representing a unique attribute and power. The six faces symbolize wisdom, love, courage, strength, prosperity, and knowledge. Thus, Lord Murugan, also known as Shanmughanathar, was born.
Lord Murugan fought fiercely against Surapadma and his army of demons. The battle raged for several days, with Lord Murugan showcasing his divine prowess and defeating the forces of evil.
Eventually, with his divine spear, known as Vel, Lord Murugan struck down Surapadma, ending his tyranny and restoring peace and harmony. To commemorate this epic battle and Lord Murugan’s victory over evil, the Kundrakudi Murugan Temple was established.
