The story behind the Khatu Shyam Ji temple

According to Hindu mythology, before the start of the Mahabharata war, Barbarica’s prowess was unparalleled. He decided to favour the weaker party to justify a decision that led to destruction on both sides, with only Barbarica surviving.

To avoid such devastating results, Lord Krishna asked Barbarika for his head (Sheesh Dan), to which he immediately agreed.

Sri Krishna was very pleased with the devotion shown to him. Through Barbarika’s great sacrifice, he gave him a boon, according to which, in the Barbarika Kaliyuga (present time), Krishna’s name, Shyam Ji, was worshipped in his form.

Construction of Khatu Shyam Mandir

After the war, Lord Krishna blessed the head of Barbarika and drowned her in the river Rupavati. After the onset of Kali Yuga, in the village of Khatu in Rajasthan, the head was buried in an invisible place until the beginning of Kali Yuga. When a cow crosses the graveyard, its udders begin to suckle naturally.

Surprised, villagers dug the place, and the buried head came out. Then Khatu king Rupsingh Chauhan had a dream in which he had asked to place his head inside the Temple. When the Temple was built, the head was enshrined in it.
