Chowmahalla Palace | Timings, History & Architecture

The Chowmahalla Palace is a magnificent monument that serves as the official residence of the Nizams of Hyderabad. It was built between 1857 and 1869. The palace is in Hyderabad, which means “Four Palaces.” The Chowmahalla Palace hours are from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The beautiful palace consists of two massive courtyards and a grand dining hall known as ‘Khilawat’. Barkat Ali Khan Mukarram Jah once owned it before he passed away in 1924.

Once a member of the Asaf Jahi dynasty, this majestic building retains some of its past splendour, having been decorated with UNESCO’s Asia Pacific Merit award in 2010.

The Chowmahalla is a majestic structural architecture. Elegant domes and arches line the facade, while intricate designs are carved out delicately. The front features broad, lavish gardens and seven gates. The courtyard is an excellent venue for dinner parties, with the palace in the background.

The Chowmahalla Complex includes several other palaces, including some that might be more famous: Jahanpanah Palace, Hyderabad Fort, and Lal Bagh Palace. In addition to the main complex, there are two world heritage sites: Purana Quila, where you’ll find the colossal Mehtab Bagh Gardens, and Qutb Shahi Tombs, with its famous Charminar Monument.

History

chowmahalla palace has a great history in India. It was commissioned by Nawab Salabat Jung Bahadur in 1750 and completed during the reign of Nawab Afzal ad Dawlah Asaf Jah V.

The fifth Nizam ensured that Chowmahalla Palace was finished in 1869. Within this time, the castle became the main centre for all activities related to Nizam’s rule, including festivities and welcoming visitors to Hyderabad.

It also served as a guest house for royalty, such as the ‘Grand Khilwat‘ en route between Madinah and Delhi. Historians believe it may have been highly influenced by similar structures designed by Juveria Khan Rahimullah Khan during her time as Shah of Iran.

Architecture

One of the most beautiful things about this is its lavish architecture. The Chowmahalla Palace architecture reflects the influence of Persian, Rajasthani, Indo-Saracenic and European styles.

Initially, it was built on 45 acres, but it was on 12 acres. This palace has two important courtyards. The northern courtyard and the southern courtyard contain elegant palaces, the grand Khilwat (Durbar Hall), different fountains, and beautiful gardens.

There are four major palaces inside. they are Afzal Mahal,  Tanhiyat Mahal,Aftab Mahal, and Mahtab Mahal. Moreover, all the administrative work is in the northern courtyard.
