Legend of Arulmigu Avinashi Lingeshwarar Temple:

As every temple has its legend, Avinashi Lingeshwar Temple also has a legend saying that it started when Sundaramurthi Nayar passed through a town. He is on his way to meet Cheraman Perumal through Avinashi. Then he saw two houses overlooking each other but with different auras.

One house is full of joy, and the other is full of sorrow for losing their boy. One day, two boys went to bathe in the river. Then, a crocodile ate one boy, and the other boy escaped the accident. Later, one day, the boy who is alive goes through his Upanayanam when he is eight years old.

Watching this, Sage Sundarar went to the Lord Shiva and started singing the 10 Pathigams, asking to return the boy. Then, during his 4th verse, the crocodile returned with the boy, healthy at eight. Sundarar returned the boy to their family, and they performed the Upanayanam. Since then, during the Panguni Uthiram festival, Mudalai Vai Pillai is performed for three days as a Utsav.
