Sri Someswara Swamy Temple Bhimavaram

Sri Someswara Swamy Temple Bhimavaram:  or Sri Someswara Janardhana Swamy temple dedicates to Lord Shiva in the form of Sri Someswara Janardhana Swamy along with his consort Sri RajaRajeswari Ammavaru. This temple is located at Gunnapudi in Bhimavaram of West Godavari. It is one of the PanchaRama Kshetras of Lord Shiva.

History of Sri Someswara Janardhana Swamy Temple:

As per the legends, demon Tarakasura owned Amrutha Athma lingam in Ksheera Sagara Mathanam. He wore it around his neck. By this, no one can defeat him because the Shiva lingam which he wears has superpowers. However, Lord Kumara Swamy son of Lord Shiva and goddess Parvathi devi who is the Sainadhipathi for all gods went to fight with him. He too failed to defeat Tarakasura at that time Lord Vishnu advice Kumara Swamy to break the Shiva lingam into pieces. So, with the advice of Lord Vishnu Kumara Swamy break the Shiva lingam with his Agni Astra and kill Tarakasura it broken into five pieces but it starts reuniting. To overcome from reuniting finally they install Shivalingas where they fell.

At this place, Chandra deva(moon) installed Shiva lingam hence it is known as Someswara Temple. In Sanskrit Soma means Moon.

During the dynasties of Chalukyas in the 4th century, this temple built by King Chalukya Bhima.

Importance of this Temple:

  • However, the face of Shivalingam in this temple is called Sadhyajathamukha Swaroopam.
  • In this temple, Shiva lingam color will change according to the Lunar rays.
  • The idol color change to white in Full moon day and day by day it changes to black on Amavasya.

Bhimavaram Someswara Swamy Temple Timings:

Generally, the timings of this temple are

  • Morning: 5:00 am to 11:00 am
  • Evening:  4:00 pm to 8:00 pm

How to reach Someswara Swamy Temple:

By Air: The nearest airport is in Rajahmundry which is at a distance of  78 km.

On Rail: Bhimavaram Jn and Bhimavaram town railway stations are near to Gunapudi However, Rajahmundry railway station is the major railway station which is at a distance of 63 km to Gunapudi.

By Bus: Bhimavaram bus station and Undi bus station are nearby bus stations to Gunapudi. However, Apsrtc runs a number of buses from all major cities to here.
