Shri Badrinath temple is at the banks of the river Alakananda on Garhwal hill, Chamoli District of Uttarakhand. The main deity of this temple is Lord Vishnu in the form of Badri Vishal/Badri Narayan. However, the idol is self-manifested of black stone. This is one of the temple od Vaishnavites. It is one of the temples to visit in Chota Char Dham and Char Dham Yatras. According to Hinduism, there are many legends behind the temple. Some of them are

  1. Once Lord Vishnu was punished by Narada Saint. In order to overcome it, he went to the Himalayas and performed meditation for a long time. Meanwhile, Goddess Lakshmi, consort of Lord Vishnu reached there. As Lord was unaware of Himalaya’s cold weather and protected him in the form of a Badri tree. However, Lord Vishnu pleased her and named the place as Badrika Ashram.
  2. According to another legend, a man named Dharma had 2 sons. The names of his sons are Nar and Narayan. In order to spread their religion, they were n search of an ideal place and came across the 4 places of Pancha Badri because the 2 sons became united with the place of Himalayas. Finally, selected the place behind the river Alakananda with hot and cold weather.

According to its unpopular history, it is believing that during the 18 th century the Buddhist shrine is converted to the Badrinath temple by Adi Shankara. However, the scripts on the temple resemble the Buddhist scripts.

In addition, it is also believing that the image of the temple was found by Adi Shankara at Alaknanda river and placed it in the pilgrimage site by him. But the temple was being attacked by many of the earthquakes in the Himalayas and again rebuilt until 1870.
