Penugonda Vasavi Kanyaka Parameswari History:
King Kusuma Sresti, made Pengonda as his capital city during 10th – 11th century AD.
King Kusama and his spouse Kusmamba used to worship Lord Shiva and Lord Vishnu daily. They were not having any children for a long period of time.
Afterwards, they approached their Kulaguru Bhaskaracharya. He suggests them to perform Putra Kamestiyaga which Dasharatha has discovered.
After performing the Yaga successfully, Kusumamba gave birth to twins on 10th of Vaishakha.
The baby boy was named as Virupaksha and girl as Vasavamba.
Virupaksha displayed his leadership qualities while Vasavamba was interested in architecture, arts, and music.
Once king Vishnu Vardhana went on a voyage to widen his empire. As a part of his voyage king, Vishnu visited Pengonda.
King Kusuma welcomed him. There Vishnu saw Vasamba and fell in love with her. He determined to marry her and sent his message to Kusuma through his minister.
Upon knowing this, king Vishnu becomes anger and sent a battalion to attack Penugonda and bring Vasavi for him.
In order to save the kingdom, Vasamba decided to self-sacrifice herself along with the couples of 102 gotras. People suspected that Vasavi as the form of God and begged her to show her swarupa.
Then she reveals herself, that has excelled the brightness of the sun. She told that she is the form of Adi parashakti to safeguard women and Dharma and to kill Vishnu Vardhana.
