Ananta Padmanabha Swamy Temple Undavalli Caves

Ananta Padmanabha Swamy Temple Undavalli Caves located in Undavalli of Guntur district. It is a Four-storeyed rock cave cuts. Lord Brahma Lord Vishnu and Lord Shiva are the main deities here. Lord Vishnu is in the form of Anantha Padmanabha Swamy.

consequently, Undavalli caves are the finest examples of Indian rock-cut architecture and are the testimonial of ancient Vishwakarma Sthapithas. In the First floor, the idols of Lord Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva were carved on the rocks. In the second floor, there is an idol of Anantha Padmanabha Swamy in resting posture which is of 20 feet long. Finally, in the third floor unfinished idols of Lord Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva and also a number of Sculptures including depictions of elephants and lions. At present this temple is under the Archaeological department of India.

History of Ananta Padmanabha Swamy Temple Undavalli Caves:

Undavalli caves are constructed in the 7th century. However, King Vishnukundin promotes Buddhism during his times A.D 420- 640. Generally, these caves used as rest houses for Buddhist monks. In fact, many locals believe that there is an underground passage between Undavalli caves and Mangalagiri temple which is of 9 km long. Chalukyan kings contribute building rock-cut caves. Later the caves are taken by Hindus. Therefore, the major part of the artwork relates to Hindu religion.

Timings of Undavalli caves and entry fees:

Generally, it opens at 9:00 a.m and closes at 6:00 p.m on all days.

Entry fees:

  • For Indian citizens – Rs 5.
  • Foreigners – Rs 100.
  • Videography – Rs 25.

How to reach Ananta Padmanabha Swamy Temple Undavalli Caves:

By Air: Nearest Airport is in Vijayawada which is at a distance of 26km.

By Train: Vijayawada Jn railway station is nearby to undavalli which is 7 km away. So, from there you can reach by road thereafter. However, Guntur railway station is 33 km away.

By Bus: From Guntur bus station it is of 31 km away and from Vijayawada bus station it is of 6.5 km away. However, APSRTC runs a number of buses from all major cities to here.
